Number of Papers published in peer-reviewed journals: Number of Papers published in non peer-reviewed journals: A Study of Supersonic Compression-Corner Interactions using Hybrid LES/RANS Models Report Title This research has developed a new hybrid large-eddy /Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence closure strategy specifically designed for strongly interacting, wall-bounded flows. The model differs from its predecessor in that the need to pre-calibrate a model constant is removed through the use of ensemble-averaged turbulence information to estimate an outer-layer turbulence length scale. The model has been applied to a variety of shock / boundary layer interactions and has shown a good level of predictive capability for both mean and second-moment quantities. A specific result of the shock / boundary layer interaction study is a strong correlation between the most probable time of a fluid within the recirculation region formed through shock interaction and the dominant low-frequency signal of the interaction. This provides evidence that the appearance of a lowfrequency mode of separation-shock unsteadiness is intimately connected with the structure of the backflow region and the mean entrainment patterns. With this knowledge in place, it may be possible to predict low-frequency dynamics of complicated interactions by examination of the mean structure of the interactions. The LES/RANS model was also tested for turbulent flow over an airfoil near static stall as an initial step toward its use in predicting dynamic stall (a) Papers published in peer-reviewed journals (N/A for none) Enter List of papers submitted or published that acknowledge ARO support from the start of the project to the date of this printing. Numerical Simulation of Shock-Wave/Boundary/Layer Interactions in a Hypersonic Compression Corner Flow

Numerical results are presented for the shock-boundary layer interactions in a hypersonic flow over a sharp leading edge compression corner. In this study, a second- order Godunov type scheme based on solving a Generalized Riemann Problem (GRP) at each cell interface is used to solve thin shear layer approximation of laminar Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. The calculated flow-field shows general...

A unified RANS-LES model: Computational development, accuracy and cost

5 Large eddy simulation (LES) is computationally extremely expensive for the investigation of wall-bounded turbulent flows at high Reynolds numbers. A way to reduce the computational cost of LES by orders of magnitude is to combine LES equations with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations used in the near-wall region. A large variety of such hybrid RANS-LES methods are currently in us...

Hybrid RANS/LES computation of plane impinging jet flow

Flow characteristics are presented of simulation results of plane impinging jets at high nozzle-plate distances, with two k-ω based hybrid RANS/LES (Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes/Large–Eddy Simulation) models and a k-ω RANS model. The first hybrid RANS/LES model is obtained by substitution of the turbulent length scale by the local grid size in the destruction term of the turbulent kinetic en...

City Research Online Evaluation of Turbulence Models Performance in Predicting Incipient Cavitation in an Enlarged Step-Nozzle

Predictive capability of RANS and LES models to calculate incipient cavitation of water in a step nozzle is assessed. The RANS models namely, Realizable k-ɛ, SST k-ω and Reynolds Stress Model did not predict any cavitation, due to the limitation of RANS models to predict the low pressure vortex cores. LES WALE model was able to predict the cavitation by capturing the shear layer instability and...

Variational Multiscale LES and Hybrid RANS/LES Parallel Simulation of Complex Unsteady Flows

We study a new hybrid RANS/Variational Multiscale LES (VMS-LES) model for bluff body flows. The simulations have been carried out using a parallelized solver, based on a mixed element/volume formulation on unstructured grids. First, the behavior of a VMS-LES model with different subgrid scale models is investigated for the flow past a circular cylinder at Reynolds number Re =3900. Second, a new...
